Young People Learn About Economic Democracy: ESOP Trainings Held
In March, ARNO finalized a series of free trainings dedicated to the topic of economic democracy and employee ownership models – ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan). Through a series of five online sessions, more than 30 participants had the opportunity to explore this innovative approach to the economy, which places democracy, participation, and shared responsibility at its core.
This was the first time in North Macedonia that ESOP was discussed in such a structured manner – a model that enables employees to become co-owners of the companies they work for. The trainings raised important questions: What does a fair economy mean today? What changes does the future of work demand? And what tools can young people use to be part of those changes?
The sessions were interactive, filled with examples, inspiring speakers, and new perspectives. Special attention was given to the Slovenian experience with implementing the ESOP model, as well as the global context – where thousands of companies already operate based on the principles of economic democracy.
ESOP is not a utopia – it is a tool. A model that can redefine economic power. Instead of being just numbers, employees become co-creators of the vision, part of decision-making, and direct contributors to the success of their companies. That is why the interest among young people was immense, and the feedback – even more encouraging.
The trainings are over, but the topic remains open – for new dialogues, fresh ideas, and emerging opportunities. ARNO will continue to explore and promote economic democracy and the ESOP model, focusing on young people and fair economic practices that can contribute to a more sustainable and just future.
The project “Shaping the Future of Work: Youth Democratic Workplaces for Social Change” is implemented by the Institute for Economic Democracy – Slovenia (coordinator) and the Association for Social Innovation “ARNO” – North Macedonia. The project is funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union. Through this project, various activities and resources are being developed to promote employee ownership models, democratic governance, and social innovations, empowering young people to actively shape the future.
